From AEC Veteran to Founder: Launching a Consulting Practice from the Inside Out

For most of my career I worked inside AEC firms—first as a designer, then in marketing and business development, eventually leading growth strategies for architecture and engineering teams. I’ve sat in pursuit meetings, built proposal calendars, written award submissions at midnight, helped principals prep for interviews, and stayed late on Fridays rewriting boilerplate so a client could finally see our value. 

I know what it’s like to win the work—and what it’s like to come in second. I know the pressure of chasing deadlines while trying to build long-term visibility. And I know how hard it is to keep your team focused on strategy when everyone’s deep in delivery. 

That’s what led me to launch Ivi Gabales Consulting. Not because I was ready to leave AEC, but because I was ready to help firms see and solve what was holding them back. 

The Patterns I Saw—and Why They Mattered 

After years of in-house experience, I started noticing the same gaps, no matter the size or reputation of the firm: 

  • Strong relationships, but unclear messaging 
  • Amazing work, but no plan to talk about it 
  • Smart people, stretched too thin chasing the wrong RFPs 
  • Marketing and BD functions operating on dated strategies 

I realized firms didn’t need more effort—they needed more focus. They needed someone who had lived their internal challenges but could bring an outside lens to help them reset, realign, and grow with intention. 

What I Bring That’s Different 

There are plenty of consultants who understand BD in theory. My value comes from having done the work—from the inside. 

  • I’ve been in your role. I’ve built strategies under tight deadlines, worked across silos, and translated technical speak into client value. I understand the nuance and the real-world constraints. 
  • I know what works across firms. I’ve supported pursuit teams, facilitated strategy sessions, and helped both emerging and legacy firms find their voice in crowded markets. 
  • I specialize in AEC. That means no need to explain industry lingo or project cycles—I get it. My frameworks are built for your world, not adapted from another industry. 

What Surprised Me Along the Way 

One of the biggest surprises in starting my consulting practice was how universal the challenges are. Whether it’s a 10-person design studio or a 300-person contractor, I hear the same concerns: 

“We’re busy, but we’re not growing.” “Our proposals aren’t telling our story.” “We keep placing second.” “We’re not sure where to focus.” 

What’s encouraging is that the solutions are often simpler than expected. Small shifts—clearer positioning, a smarter pursuit plan, better follow-through—can completely change the trajectory of a firm’s BD efforts. 

Why It’s Not About Reinventing—It’s About Refocusing 

I don’t believe firms need to overhaul everything to succeed. Most of the time, the talent, experience, and relationships are already there. My job is to help connect the dots—to translate what you’re doing into what clients are looking for, and to help you do more of what works (and less of what doesn’t).
