I had dinner with a group of my high school friends recently.
Five hour dinner. Five business owners. Four of us in professional services.

At some point, the conversation turned to what I do.
Personal brand. Thought leadership. Building trust online.
One of them paused and said, “I’m not an influencer.”
And just like that, I realized we weren’t even talking about the same thing.
They’ve heard of influencers but they’ve never seen themselves as one.
Not the kind endorsing products.
Not the ones doing the latest dance.
But the kind people follow AND TRUST.
I get it. For most of their careers, they didn’t need to think this way.
Their businesses were built on reputation.
On referrals.
On relationships formed over years, sometimes decades.
That system works.
Until it doesn’t work as well as it used to.
Here’s what’s changed.
Your next client isn’t always sitting inside your network anymore.
They’re outside of it. Watching.
They’re reading what you share.
Paying attention to how you think.
Noticing how consistently you show up.
And long before they ever reach out, they’ve already made a decision:
DO I TRUST THIS PERSON.
That decision used to happen in a conference room, or over coffee or through a mutual connection.
In 2026 it happens quietly.
Digitally.
At scale.
This is where so many professionals get stuck. They have evolved but their practice hasn’t.
They think visibility equals self-promotion.
They think showing up online means becoming someone they’re not.
So they opt out.
And in doing so, they unintentionally hand over trust-building to the people who are willing to show up.
Not necessarily the most experienced.
Not necessarily the most qualified.
JUST MORE VISIBLE.
That’s the shift no one is talking about enough.
Thought leadership isn’t about becoming an influencer in the way social media has defined it.
It’s about becoming findable.
Knowable.
Trustable.
When someone finally reaches out to you today, you’re not starting from zero.
If you’ve been showing up with clarity and consistency.
You’re already halfway to trusted advisor.
That shortens everything.
The sales cycle.
The level of skepticism.
The effort it takes to prove your value.
This is what I mean when I talk about Relationship to ROI.
It’s not just about who you know anymore.
It’s about who already trusts you BEFORE YOU EVER MEET.
And the uncomfortable truth is this:
If you’re not actively building that trust online, you’re not neutral.
YOU’RE INVISIBLE.
And in a market that’s getting louder and more competitive by the day, invisibility comes at a cost.
So maybe the better question isn’t “Do I want to be an influencer?”
It’s this:
Are you willing to let someone else shape the perception of your expertise
just because they chose to show up and you didn’t?
